Levels of Support - My catch phrases for parent / teacher roles in skill development
As students progress through various levels of skill development the role of the parent and teacher change to support their growth. Some times it is easy to forget what we are shooting for, which is independence. We want students to reach a high level of independence and for them to reach their goals. I will use these phrases through out the web page.
Student Role* Starting to learn a skill - this could be the first time a skill is introduced to the student or it could be the 100th time. The key part of this stage is that they are learning the skill. They still need someone to be right there with them modeling and teaching it to them.
* Still learning but starting to take ownership - Student is starting to do part of the process by themselves but needs reminders on other parts. May use visuals, or models to figure it out. * Able to do skill independently - Student can do it all by themselves without any interventions. May continue to use accommodations or modifications to support. |
Parent / Teacher Role* "Sage on the Stage" - Parent / teacher is completely guiding the student through the skill. THey are teaching it, modeling it, or even doing it with the student.
* "Guide on the Side" - Parent / teacher role is starting to change. The parent / teacher is near the student to help when needed, but not sitting right next to them. THey are aware of where the student has difficulties and may provide cues or prompts to support. May suggest to the student to get out their notes or visuals. Parent / Teacher needs to celebrate the small stuff with the student. High fives and encouraging words are AWESOME! * "Fan in the Stands" - Parent / Teacher role is to celebrate the success the student has made. No more teaching or doing for the student because they can do it all themselves. |
Dandelions
Why does Mrs. Deckinga use dandelions as her personal motto?
Because they never quit growing. Dandelions are considered a weed meaning that people don't want it growing in their yards. They have wonderful uses and can even be used in medicines, but people spray them with weed killer and try to get rid of them. What does the dandelion do when things get tough? It keeps growing. It seeds out and tries another avenue for growth. It never gives up on being a dandelion.
